Controls to be discussed at upcoming Council meeting

Published on November 15, 2008

There are no decisions expected at the EU Fisheries Ministers’ Council meeting on November 18, but the member states will continue discussions on the modernisation of the control system applicable to the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).

The Commission laid forth in the preceding week a proposal for a new Council Regulation for the EU fisheries control system (se earlier news report).

That point on the agenda also includes exchanges of views on the strategy for the sustainable development of aquaculture in Europe, and the simplification process of the CFP.

Other matters to come up at the meeting will be the bilateral fisheries agreement with Norway, the adjusted Polish quotas for cod in the Baltic Sea 2008-2011, and the Council will finally try to reach political agreement on the adoption of the cod stocks recovery plan adopted in 2004.
