FishSec is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the protection and restoration of marine ecosystem services, with a focus on fisheries in the Baltic Sea region and the European Union. Our long-term goal is well managed seas with rich biodiversity and thriving fish stocks to secure healthy and local seafood to consumers and a sustainable fishing sector. We advocate for fisheries working within the limits of the marine ecosystem, preserving marine resources as well as their habitats.

We are a Sweden-based NGO founded in 2003 by three environmental organisations: The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, WWF Sweden and the Swedish Angler’s Association.

FishSec is recruiting a new Executive Secretary who will be the face of the Secretariat in national and international fora, but also participate actively in our work on the implementation of the EU fisheries policy, focusing on ecosystem-based fisheries management in the Baltic Sea. We are looking for a driven and experienced individual to be a part of our small team of experts (2–3 people).

The position combines leadership with international advocacy, administration & fundraising and managing current projects. Together with our Board, you will be responsible for the work programme and budget, as well as securing future funding.

At FishSec, we work in an international environment with partners all across Europe, engaging with decision-makers, civil servants, NGOs, scientists and the fishing sector. We advocate and build stakeholder alliances to ensure sustainable ecosystem-based fisheries, and a thriving marine environment.

Work tasks/responsibilities

  • Organisational leadership & project management:
    • Staff management and budget administration.
    • Strategic development of the organisation.
    • Fundraising and partnership development.
    • Donor relations and reporting.
    • Project coordination.
  • Representation, advocacy and networking:
    • Networking both in Sweden and internationally.
    • Participation in the Baltic Sea Advisory Council and other regional fora.
    • Coordinating advocacy through extensive collaboration with other stakeholders on Baltic and EU-level.
    • Advocacy work.
  • Communication:
    • Ensure relevant content & managing social media channels.

Required qualifications for the position:

  • Formal education equivalent to BSc or higher.
  • Documented management experience, including managing staff and projects.
  • Previous experience of budget work and office administration.
  • Previous experience of fisheries management and/or environmental policy work, as well as a keen interest for developments in these areas.
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken Swedish and English.
  • Personal skills: comfortable representing an organisation, giving public presentations and interacting with many different stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the Swedish language and Swedish administration.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Experience in international project management and coordination.
  • Understanding of the EU policy processes and fisheries science.
  • Knowledge of other European languages is an advantage.

 

FishSec has a flexible working environment, with staff currently working remotely in several EU countries without a physical office. We welcome international applicants but at the point of employment you will need to be resident in Sweden.

This post is full-time (40 hours) starting as soon as possible. FishSec is a member of the Employers’ Alliance (Arbetsgivaralliansen) and we apply their agreement for non-profit organisations.
