Stakeholder event on the common fisheries policy

Location: Brussels, Belgium

Dates: 10 June 2022

Hybrid event. Online and Brussels. Registrations are now open for a hybrid stakeholder event on the functioning of the common fisheries policy (CFP) and common market organisation (CMO), taking place on 10 June 2022 in Brussels, Belgium. Concluding a consultation process that started last December, the event will help the European Commission prepare the report on the functioning of the CFP and CMO, due both to be adopted by the end of the year. The stakeholder event will take place in a hybrid setting, with participation possible both in Brussels and online. It will offer a unique opportunity to take stock of the functioning of the CFP and CMO and discuss challenges and best practices with all relevant stakeholders working in the fisheries and aquaculture world. All stakeholders, including the fishing industry, non-governmental organisations, academic, scientific, social and economic partners are invited to take part in the event. Discussion will be organised around two thematic plenary sessions. The first session will cover the social, economic and environmental objectives of the CFP. How can fishers and producer organisations cope with crises and strengthen their resilience… with a focus on climate change, social aspects, markets and clean ocean. The second thematic session will revolve around innovation, resilience and governance in the fisheries world. All of this coupled with the challenges that have been identified throughout the consultation.

World Oceans Day 2022

Location: Global

Dates: 08 June 2022

The theme of the United Nations World Oceans Day in 2022 is Revitalization. The UN World Oceans Day was first proposed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, as a way to celebrate the world’s oceans and our connection to the sea, as well as to raise awareness about the crucial role the oceans and their living and non-living resources play in our lives and the important ways people can help protect it. Careful management of these essential global resources, including biodiversity and fish resources, is a key to a sustainable future. According to the UN, marine protected areas (MPAs) need to be effectively managed and well-resourced and regulations need to be put in place to reduce overfishing, marine pollution and ocean acidification. The UN Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea is actively coordinating different activities for World Oceans Day, while UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) sponsors the World Ocean Network.

World Fish Migration Day 2022: Break free

Dates: 21 May 2022

This year the theme is Brake Free, celebrating the removal of river barriers and the recovery of migratory fish populations. Endangered Species Day 2022

Location: Global

Dates: 20 May 2022

This global day of action and celebration of endangered species was created by David Robinson and the Endangered Species Coalition in 2006. On Endangered Species Day, organisations, groups and individuals hold special events to remind us of how fragile the existence of some animals, plants and insects is, and why it is important to protect them. Endangered Species Day reminds us that many species on our planet are at risk of going extinct. According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, more than 40,000 species are threatened with extinction, among them 37 % of sharks and rays, European eel and other eel species, many crustaceans and corals. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), which also occurs in the Baltic Sea, is classed as Vulnerable. If you are holding an event, use the hashtag #endangeredspeciesday on social media.
