Greenpeace-Poland turns five

Published on April 24, 2009

Successful actions to save Poland’s “Green lungs” and to stop that nation from becoming “the Trojan horse of genetic engineering” were highlighted as most memorable feats as the Greenpeace Polish branch recently celebrated its 5th anniversary.

Much has changed within the scope of environmental work in Poland since Greenpeace’s official opening there on 19 April of 2004, officials said. In a recent interview, departing director Maciej Muskat noted that a majority of Poles nowadays no longer believe that economic development has priority over environmental protection. According to a new opinion poll conducted by the NGO Support Center (NGO.pl), the public perceives climate change to be one of the greatest environmental issues affecting our environment today.

Another Greenpeace official, Press Officer Katarzyna Guzek, described the political situation in Poland as quite turbulent over the last five years, with three separate elections in that short time. The goals of the current government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk look more promising when compared to the goals of the previous government of the Kaczynski brothers, she added, particularly mentioning good relations to Minister of the Environment Maciej Nowicki, who she said supports NGO.led environmental protection work and initiatives.

FISH was represented at the Greenpeace anniversary in Warsaw by Iwona Roman.
