Sweden to implement transferable quotas

Published on February 12, 2009

As a part of a plan with the goal of reducing the nation’s trawler feet by a third, the Swedish Government today introduced a proposal for transferable fishing rights in pelagic fishing.

According to the proposal, it will be possible for some vessels to take over allotted quotas from other fishers, thereby improving the profitability of their business. The fisher giving up his right meanwhile has an incitement to scrap his vessel in a financially more acceptable way.

“It is important to me to cut down on overcapacity in the fishing fleet”, Eskil Erlandsson, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, said. “The proposal will contribute to sustainable fisheries and improve the situation for the industry. A fishing fleet in balance provides with conditions for an environmentally and financially sustainable fishery”.

The new law is proposed to be implemented from July1.
