New Economics Foundation analyses fishing quota decisions

A new nef report finds an average of 7 out of every 10 TACs were set exceeding scientific advice over the last fifteen years. The Fisheries Council have set fishing quotas which often exceed scientific advice and out of line with legislated principles in the CFP.

2016 catch quotas for the North Atlantic and North Sea to be decided at the Fisheries Council on 15 December. FishSec is concerned that the Council will repeat its pattern of poor adherence to scientific advice and the goals of the CFP.

Council mandates overfishing of vulnerable cod stocks into 2016: CFP goals undermined

2016 fishing quotas have been set with seven out of ten quotas exceeding scientific advice. Whilst the Total Allowable Catches (TACs) are generally a decrease compared with this year, they exceed scientific advice in most cases, and for cod quotas are worryingly high.

Baltic TACs to be set at October Council

We emphasise the need to set fishing opportunities below the exploitation level that corresponds with maximum sustainable yield (FMSY) by 2015, where possible, and by 2020 at the latest in order to restore and maintain fish stocks above levels capable of producing maximum sustainable yield as required by the CFP.
