BALTEEL-RECO

Baltic Sea eel recovery from an ecosystem perspective

The goal of our project Baltic Sea eel recovery from an ecosystem perspective (BALTEEL-RECO) is to promote a coordinated approach to eel recovery in the Baltic Sea region.

The project started in 2021 as a collaboration between FishSec and partners in Estonia (Eestimaa Looduse Fond), Latvia (Pasaules Dabas Fonds) and Lithuania (Lietuvos gamtos fondas).

In order to promote better national management and greater Baltic coordination of efforts to protect and rebuild the eel population in the Baltic Sea region, we have compared the national eel management plans and restocking practices in the four countries with the objectives of the EU eel regulation. In addition to our analysis, each partner has organised national roundtables with a wide range of stakeholders to discuss the national eel management plans. We have also carried out activities to increase public awareness of the status of the eel population.

As part of BALTEEL-RECO, FishSec and Naturskyddsföreningen held Swedish roundtable meetings in Gothenburg (May 2022) and Stockholm (November 2022) to discuss Swedish eel management and restocking. Read more here (in Swedish).

A report on restocking practices in the four countries, as well as a Policy Brief on the analysis of the national Eel management Plans (EMPs) were produced.

In autumn 2023, BALTEEL-RECO phase II started, with additional partners in Sweden, Finland and Germany.

The BALTEEL-RECO project is funded by the Swedish Institute, and is co-funded by the Swedish Authority for Water and Marine Management (SwAM) and The Waterloo Foundation.
