New study takes a closer look at Baltic Sea fishing fleets

A new study shows that regulations have the strongest impact on fishing strategies. While this has contributed to the recovery of the Baltic Sea cod stock, there are long-term risks with a “command-and-control”-type of management leaving fishers more specialised and inflexible.

Technical Measures at BSAC

On February 19 the Baltic Sea Advisory Council (BSAC) met in Copenhagen to discussion the development of a new Technical Measures Framework. This included specifically catch metrics, selectivity profiles, and closed areas. BSAC also included an afternoon discussion about the existing technical measures.

PECH discussed Baltic multiannual plan

The draft report on the proposal for multiannual plans for the Baltic Sea was discussed during the Fisheries Committee meeting in Brussels earlier this week. The rapporteur persists, despite loud protests from other MEPs, to move forward with the proposal quickly with no intention to wait for new scientific advice expected to be available within one-two months.

MSY hearing at the Fisheries Committee

A public hearing on Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) in Fisheries Management was hosted by the Fisheries Committee. A number of experts within the field where invited, with discussing focused on both scientific and practical aspects of implementing MSY to fisheries management within EU fisheries.

New roadmap for MSFD descriptor 3.3

ICES hosted a workshop on Descriptor 3 under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). Particular emphasis was made to finalise the advice for indicators under descriptor 3.1 and 3.2 and to establish a roadmap for how to move forward with Descriptor 3.3.

Provisional political agreement on the omnibus regulation reached

The Council and the European Parliament reached a provisional political agreement today on the implementation of the landing obligation and the so called omnibus regulation. The agreement was made during the second informal trilogue meeting held on the issue.
