Restricted daily catches for Swedish fishermen

Published on December 10, 2008

A new proposal from the Swedish Board of Fisheries sets roofs for daily landings of cod, saithe and Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) along the West Coast.

The proposal also includes a ban of discards, for those three species as well as some other important catches, e.g. herring, sprat and mackerel.

A single vessel would be permitted only one landing a day, and fishermen exceeding the daily limit would have to pay an extra charge.

The proposal is currently being referred for consideration among interested parts, but came after suggestions from the Swedish Fishermen’s Federation that the Board of Fisheries take over their own system for rationing, which they felt needed improvement.

The proposed limits, in kilos:

The North Sea The Kattegat The Skagerrak
Saithe 10,000 2,000 1,000
Norway lobster 400 400
Cod 2,000 400 200
