Norwegian Institute for water Research (NIVA)

Norsk Institutt For Vatten Forskning

Norway - Non-Governmental organisation

NIVA’s research and report work comprise feasibility studies and evaluations of the state of rivers, lakes, groundwaters, fjords and coastal waters. Also, NIVA conducts environmental technical research related to water purification, industrial processes and biotechnology aiming to find practical solutions to environmental problems in water. The institute is also working to improve the methods of complete management and use of water resources (integrated water resource management), and develops action plans to improve the environment. NIVA is involved in several projects under international environmental law and conventions and is heavily involved in EU’s environmental research programme. NIVA partakes in a multitude of projects aiming to transfer knowledge and expertise to development countries, in Africa and Asia in particular. Approximately 25 per cent of NIVA’s income is generated abroad.

NIVA has 180 employees of whom 90 are researchers, 35 of whom hold PhDs in chemistry, biology, limnology, geology, hydrology, environmental technology, environmental toxicology, oceanography, geography, resource management or economy. In addition, the subsidiary company Akvaplan-niva has a staff of 30, making Akvaplan-niva an integral part of NIVA’s knowledge and resource base. NIVA is a member of The Environmental Research Alliance of Norway (Envira) , which includes other Norwegian environmental research institutions (NINA, NILU, Jordforsk, NIBR and NIKU). This strategic alliance was established in 2002 in order to strengthen and coordinate environmental research.
