The Ministry has a broad range of tasks. Areas of responsibility include the following: Agriculture, Environmental issues in the agricultural field, Fishery, Reindeer husbandry, Sami issues, Horticulture, Animal welfare, Foodstuffs, Hunting and game management, Higher education and research in the field of agricultural sciences, Consumer policy The Ministry is headed by Ann-Christin Nykvist and has approximately 150 employees.

Sweden is working actively for a stricter and more effective application of the Common Fisheries Policy to stop the negative trend regarding fish stocks and to achieve sustainable fisheries. The Government considers that quotas must be in line with scientific recommendations.
