Federal Research Centre for Fisheries - Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries (IOR)
Bundesforschungsanstalt für Fischerei - Institut für Ostseefischerei Rostock (IOR)Germany - Academic institution or department
The main task of the Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries in Rostock are the scientific investigation into the sustainable use of the fisheries resources of the Baltic Sea. The sustainability should warrant, that a high biological level, a healthy age distribution and a stable productivity is achieved by the fish stocks, as this would guarantee a long term fishery with little negative ecological impact.
Fisheries ManagementThe Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries produces data and decision making tools to facilitate a sustainable fisheries management and contributes to the international research in this area.Stock AssessmentsStatus and development of the stocks of cod, herring and sprat as well as of the flatfish species plaice, dub and flounder are investigated. Modelling and StatisticsThe statistical analysis of catch data, the development of models as well as the careful planning of surveys are a main basis for fisheries management. Reproduction Biology and Recruitment ResearchInvestigation of fecundity of adults and larvae surveys allow for the estimation of recruitment. Selectivity of nets used in the BalticThe IOR contributes to the development of more selective gears and catch methods - carried out by the Institute for Fishing Technology and Fishery Economics (IFF) in Hamburg - to reduce the amount of unwanted bycatch.
