The main function of the Department is to devise and implement the fisheries policy with the purpose of developing fishing industry and increasing its competitiveness.

At the moment one of the most important tasks is to develop Fisheries Strategy and Action Plan for 2007 – 2013 and legal framework for implementation of European Fisheries Fond in Estonia.
