The main goals of the fundamental scientific activities of the EstonianMartine Institute are: (1) exchange of matter and energy between theecological subsystems of the Baltic Sea; (2) structure, dynamics andfunctioning of the Baltic ecological subsystems and their internalexchange of matter and energy; (3) changes in the ecosystems caused bynatural and human impacts and (4) development of the ecosystem andprognostic models and their verification. The main efforts in appliedscience are: (1) stock assessment of fish and macroalgae of the BalticSea, composition of forecasts of possible catches and management advice;(2) marine monitoring, incl. Participation in national and in the HELCOMBaltic Sea Marine Monitoring Programme and (3) Expert evaluations andcontracts (e.g., environmental impact assessments).
