Close to 100 NGOs in Barroso approach on harmful subsidies

Published on March 17, 2011

In a letter to EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso ninety-one European and other European organisations accuse the Commission of having “failed to live up to its own commitments” when it comes to reforming fishing subsidies.

The signing organisations, one of whom was FISH, said they were “deeply concerned” that the Commission had “ignored calls from the European Council and the European Parliament by not publishing the roadmap for the reform of environmentally harmful subsidies”.

“It is regrettable that public funds continue to be used to subsidise environmentally harmful activities”, the letter added.

The organisations said they were convinced that “only a roadmap can ensure a harmonised approach to eliminating environmental harmful subsidies”, adding that they would be pleased to discuss this subject in a face to face meeting.
